COLLECTIONS
The Black Belt Museum continues to develop professional-level research collections in geology and paleontology, historical objects and archives, arts and crafts, botany and zoology, and archaeology. The cultural and geographic Black Belt region is the primary, although not the sole, focus of these collections.
Archaeology
A relatively new collection focusing on the materials recovered from Fort Tombecbe, Old Bluffport, and other historic and prehistoric sites in West Alabama. (Dr. Ashley Dumas, Curator)
Art Collection
The University of West Alabama Art Collection contains about 350 items, primarily paintings and engravings. (Dr. James Lamb, Curator)
Botany
The Herbarium of the University of West Alabama contains an estimated 15,000 specimens. (Dr. Brian Keener, Curator)
The University of West Alabama is also the home of the Alabama Plant Atlas a comprehensive searchable database of plants that occur in the state of Alabama, supervised by Dr. Keener. This is a cooperative project of the Center for the Study of the Black Belt, the Alabama Herbarium Consortium and The University of West Alabama.
Entomology

Geology
This collection includes rocks and minerals representing a broad geographic range and includes an estimated 3,000 items. (Dr. Andrew Rindsberg, Curator)
History
This is a relatively new collection of about 3,000 items that focuses on historical materials from West Alabama. (Dr. James Lamb, Curator)
Invertebrate
Primarily from the Alabama and Mississippi Black Belt, an estimated 3,000 lots of fossil specimens are in this collection. (Dr. Andrew Rindsberg, Curator)
Vertebrate
There are almost 1,000 lots of vertebrate fossil specimens in this collection, primarily from the Alabama Black Belt. (Mr. James Lamb, Curator)
